At the time of publication, Kurdish History has found no public TikTok announcement identifying “Kurdistan” itself as banned or classifying the name as hate speech.
What has been reported
Users shared screenshots and accounts of a search warning appearing for the English spelling of “Kurdistan”. The reports described different results depending on language and script, which may indicate a search or moderation error rather than a blanket platform-wide rule. Subsequent user reports said the restriction had been lifted.
These accounts are important, but they are not by themselves confirmation of a permanent policy. Search results can vary by country, language, account, application version and enforcement changes. Kurdish History was not able to independently test every regional or language setting.
What TikTok’s published policy says
TikTok’s Community Guidelines describe hate speech as content that attacks, threatens, dehumanises or promotes discrimination against people because of protected characteristics. The guidelines do not list “Kurdistan” as a hateful term. TikTok also says it may limit or redirect searches involving terms that violate its rules, meaning an incorrect classification can materially affect discovery even if content is not removed.
Why this matters
“Kurdistan” is used by millions of people in cultural, historical, linguistic and geographic contexts, as well as in the official name of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Treating the name as a hate-speech term would make it harder for Kurdish communities, journalists, researchers and cultural institutions to find and share legitimate information.
What users can do
- Save screenshots showing the warning, including the date, language and country or region setting where possible.
- Use TikTok’s in-app reporting and feedback tools to flag the restriction as an error.
- Avoid assuming that an individual warning proves a permanent global policy until TikTok confirms it publicly.
- Share source-based reporting rather than unverified screenshots or claims about who caused the restriction.
