Xelîlê Sêrtî was a scholar and poet associated with Hizan and Siirt. Research identifies named Kurdish verse works, a substantial Arabic scholarly corpus and poems preserved in manuscript collections.

A scholar whose dates require care
Xelîlê Sêrtî is also known as Molla Halil es-Siirdî. Adnan Memduhoğlu places his birthplace at Külpik, also called Süttaşı, in Hizan near Bitlis, rather than Siirt itself. His review records competing birth dates, including 1750 and 1754, and differing death dates; his article adopts 1750–1843. [1] A single exact birth year without qualification would conceal disagreement in the biographical record.
Learning and teaching across the region
Memduhoğlu traces studies through several regional centres and an authorisation to teach received from Molla Mahmud at Amadiya. He describes teaching at Hizan’s Meydan madrasa and then at Siirt’s Fahriye madrasa, the city associated with his later name. [1] This is an educational itinerary involving teachers, texts and authorisation. It supports a concrete account of scholarly work more securely than treating every school in the region as his personal institution.
Named Kurdish works
Abdurrahman Adak identifies Nehcu’l-Enam and Rîsaleya Tecwîdê as Kurdish works in verse, alongside a predominantly Arabic corpus. He describes Nehcu’l-Enam as a text read and memorised in Kurdish madrasas. [2] Naming individual works and their languages matters: their existence does not show that all the author’s grammar, logic or legal textbooks were written in Kurdish.
The poet using the name Şewqî
Adak’s 2010 study publishes four Kurdish poems from two manuscript collections. One is attributed to Xelîl himself; the other belongs to his descendant Şêx Cuneydê Zoqeydî. The pen name Şewqî appears in this evidence. [2] Manuscript collection, authorial attribution and editorial publication are distinct stages. The four poems examined in that article should not be mistaken for a complete inventory of everything he wrote.
A traceable printed edition
Finland’s National Repository Library records Nehc-ul enam, published in Stockholm by Kurdistan in 1988, under Mele Xelîlê Sêrtî, with Zeynelabîdîn Kaya identified in the transliteration statement. It lists Kurdish as the language and ISBN 91-87096-02-1. [3] This provides a specific edition readers can locate. A catalogue record establishes publication details; it does not replace reading the work or establish which edition every madrasa used.
Assessing the educational legacy
The evidence here concerns a particular scholar’s teaching career, named writings and the transmission of poems and teaching texts. [1] [2] Claims about his educational influence should be tied to such records. Labels such as a single founder of modern Kurdish education or an author of an entirely Kurdish scientific curriculum need additional evidence about institutions, chronology and the language of each work.
